Abstract Description

Of the 5 most important global challenges shaping the 21st century, pandemics pose a special challenge. In tracing three decades of HIV research, this presentation captures some of the major research breakthroughs in HIV prevention made by CAPRISA. The Covid-19 pandemic threw a new spotlight on science. In rising to this challenge by making scientific and policy contributions, CAPRISA’s scientists focused on viral variants, assessments of vaccine and diagnostic performance and strategic endgame planning. The role of science came to the fore especially in shaping pandemic policy, as well as the extensive efforts to counter disinformation and communicate science to the public. The lessons from these pandemic threats are drawn to help guide future pandemic responses - underscoring the continuing need for scientific integrity, international cooperation, and evidence-based decision-making to safeguard global health. The overarching theme is the importance of global solidarity, mutual interdependence, and shared responsibility in combating these global health threats.
